 LANSCE IPF Facility
The Los Alamos Isotope Program has a user community of over 250 research institutions and a host of industrial customers. Throughout the history of isotope production at LANSCE, a major focus has been production of isotopes with medical applications. LANSCE-produced isotopes have been used in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and other diseases.
The new LANSCE Isotope Production Facility (IPF) gives us the opportunity to continue this tradition of isotope production and supply along with isotope application R&D. The new facility provides a state-of-the-art production capability that enhances the supply of short-lived medical isotopes used in diagnostic and therapeutic applications. It will also contribute to the supply of research isotopes and isotopes for industrial applications.
Radioisotopes have been produced at the LANSCE facility (and hot-cell facilities at the TA-48 Main Radiochemistry Site) since the mid-1970s. During this period, isotopes of more than 30 elements have been produced. These isotopes have applications in modern medicine, industry, national and homeland security, and research advances in environmental and material science.
